CUT, FOLD, PRAY is a day to explore emotive themes of the Christian faith through the physical, hands-on, creative process of zine-making.
Perhaps there is a theme of the Christian faith that is particularly meaningful to you, or there is a question about the faith that you keep returning to, image(s) from scripture that speak to you, or something you want to say to God that you struggle to put into words.
This one-off creative day is an invitation to slow down, explore thought-provoking themes and make.
You don’t need to be an artist. You don’t need to be a writer. You don’t need any experience of making zines. Just come curious!
WHAT IS A ZINE?
A zine is small, handmade booklet that can contain pretty much anything: Words, drawings, photographs, poetry, collage, questions, prayers, images, Bible verses and fragments of everyday life.
WHY MAKE A CHRISTIAN ZINE?
Zines have a long history within DIY, punk and anarchist cultures. They are small, independent publications made by ordinary people rather than institutions or authorities. They create space for voices that are often ignored or pushed to the margins. There is something deeply resonant about that when we think about Jesus.
Jesus challenged the religious and political assumptions of his time. He welcomed outsiders, questioned authority, turned expectations upside down and proclaimed a different kind of kingdom – where the last could be first and the marginalised could be called blessed.
Jesus doesn’t ask us to fit comfortably into the world as it is, but invites us to imagine a radically different way of living. Your zine might become a prayer, protest, collage, poem, manifesto, confession or collection of questions.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Before the workshop begins, you will have the opportunity to select one of the below themes for your zine. For each theme, a selection of verses from scripture will be available as starting points for your consideration.
Doubt–Can you be a Christian and not be sure?
Church–What is the Church for?
The Margins–Who belongs?
Revolution–Was Jesus an anarchist?
Hell–Eternal punishment or something else?
Power–Who gets to be in charge?
Tell–What is evangelism?
Alternatively, you are welcome to choose a theme of your own. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring along any images, photographs, cards, old magazines, newspapers, postcards, maps, photographs, unwanted books or other paper materials for collage.
WHAT WILL WE DO?
10.00am — Welcome & introduction
Welcome prayer, refreshments, an introduction to zines and some examples to explore. We’ll think together about what zines can do and what it might mean to make one as an expression or exploration of faith.
10.30am — Learn to make a zine
You will be shown how to fold and cut a simple 8-page zine. You’ll have the chance to experiment before beginning your final piece.
10.45am — Themes + reflection
If you haven’t already, you will select the theme that you would like to work from. We’ll have a chat through each theme and the possibilities for exploration within each one.
11.30am — Ideas & materials
We’ll begin gathering words, images and ideas. You will have access to zine-making materials, as well as some scripture that is relevant to each of the themes.
12.00pm — Lunch Please bring your own lunch. 12.30pm — Make your zine!
This is the main creative session. Cut, stick, draw, write, collage, question, pray, experiment. There are no artistic rules and no expectation that your zine should look a particular way.
2.15pm — Break
2.30pm — Finishing & reflection
We’ll finish our zines and then spend some time reflecting on them together. You can share as much or as little of your work as you like. We’ll think about what we noticed, what surprised us and whether making something changed the way we thought about each theme.
3.30pm — Zine sharing
We’ll create a little exhibition of everyone’s work and have time to look at and celebrate one another’s creations.
4.00pm — Closing prayer & home
You’ll leave with your own handmade zine – a small, unique record of your day exploring a theme of the Christian faith.
The creative session will be led by Emeri, an independent facilitator, researcher and experienced zine-maker, who will introduce us to the world of zines and guide us through creating our own. The Christian theme based elements of the day will be shaped by Sophie (With support from Rev’d Lizzy), creating space for prayer, reflection and conversation alongside the creative process.
